You compare a blemish-free carrot with its crooked friend, and which are you more likely to choose?
It may be nobbly. It may be uneven in colour. It may need a minute more of your time. But its all fresh and delicious. It’s also excellent value for money.
The really good stuff comes in all shapes and sizes.
Intrigued? Read on...
What constitutes wonky? Wonky on account of defects such as missing stalks, extreme curvature, imperfect colouring and smaller size. Apart from their appearance they are no different to normal vegetables and you will certainly notice there is no difference in the taste.
Most supermarkets now sell imperfectly perfect veg and you'll notice the difference price wise. You can't 'beet' it!
With the colder months upon us, buy some wonky veg and turn them into warming soups or comforting stews – you’ll see there’s absolutely no difference in taste at all!
REDUCE FOOD WASTE
A number of factors, including poor weather conditions, can cause fruit and vegetables to become misshapen or blemished.
In the UK alone, over 3 million tonnes of fruit & veg wasted before it has even left the farm & when fruit & veg go to waste, so does all the energy, water and time that went into growing it. If food waste was a country, it would be the third biggest emitter of greenhouse emissions.
Selling wonky goods enables growers to sell their whole crop, thus minimising edible food waste.
SAVE THE PLANET
Rescuing food waste also has a knock on effect on the planet, saving water resources and limiting carbon footprints. Eliminating global food waste would save 4.4million tonnes of Co2 a year, the equivalent of taking 1 in 4 cars off the road.
And it’s estimated that if only one quarter of the food currently lost or wasted was saved, it could feed 870 million hungry people!
So on your next shop why not join the wonky veg revolution?
