An Interview With Our Golf Pro
Have you been considering golf lessons? Colchester not only offers two incredible courses, it also benefits from the expertise of Gary Carter.
We managed to steal some time from our golf pro to learn more about him and to get some tips – Essex golf wouldn’t be the same without him…
Gary has been playing golf for over 40 years, but how did he start out? “As a junior member at East Herts Golf Club! I represented Hertfordshire at all levels throughout the years. I was also in the England under 18 squad and turned professional 33 years ago at the age of 21.”
With such undeniable passion for the game, it was only logical for Gary to start sharing his knowledge and skills. “I became Assistant Professional at Cirencester Golf Club for 5 years and played in several West Region PGA events. I then spent 5 years in Germany and Switzerland coaching and playing.” Not only well travelled, Gary then made the choice to join us at our hotel permanently. He’s been the Golf Professional at Five Lakes for 23 years, and we are lucky to have him.
Thanks for talking to us today Gary. What is your favourite competition memory?
Winning the Essex PGA Championship 1998 and playing the European Tour Senior PGA Championship at the London Club this year.
Golfers spend a lot of time perfecting their swing. Can you share with us what the most challenging swing has been for you?
1st Tee shot at the European Tour Senior PGA Championship last week! It was very stressful.
Here at Five Lakes we offer coaching as well as access to our superb Lakes and Links courses. If you had one piece of advice for beginners, what would it be?
Take lessons from a PGA Professional! If that isn’t something you plan on doing in the immediate future, I’d recommend getting out onto the green and playing as much as possible.
What happens on a typical golf day at Five Lakes?
No day is similar; every day is different. We look after the golf members, societies and hotel guests which makes the role diverse. It’s a great challenge coaching because everyone is unique – but it is also very rewarding when you see pupils from all levels improve.
And finally, how does membership at Five Lakes work?
Our golfing membership has been designed to be competitively priced. You will have access to our course and facilities so not only does this mean you can play on both courses, you can also play in any of the competitions held at the resort year-round. You’ll receive a handicap at Five Lakes and will be eligible to represent the club at external competitions and events.
Thanks for talking to us Gary! It’s safe to say that you won’t find a more exciting Golf Membership in Essex. Golf facilities like ours are few and far between: 7-day members have access to our leisure facilities, including the spa, sauna, steam room and gym. We offer discounts to over 65’s and to those who only wish to use the club during the week.
Give Gary a call if you would like to discuss starting golf lessons; Colchester offers two varied courses and wonderful facilities. You’ll receive the best membership and hotel rates when you book direct.
